Lalibela is a small town in Ethiopia that is home to one of the most impressive collections of rock-hewn churches in the world. The churches were built in the 12th century by King Gebre Meskal Lalibela, who is said to have been inspired by a dream to create a “New Jerusalem” in Ethiopia. The churches are carved out of solid rock and are interconnected by a network of tunnels and passages. They are considered to be one of the most important religious sites in Ethiopia and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
